Self-Defense - Cycle 1
Striking Talon -
This is a traditional Kenpo Self-Defense technique.
It is a defense against a wrist grab, 1 or 2 hands, it does not matter.
Steps (let's assume your left hand is being held):
- With your free Right Hand, do a Palm Strike to your partners nose or face.
- Reach with your free Right Hand through the middle or over partners arm and grab your own Left Fist
- Step back with your right foot and pull your Left Hand to your right shoulder. We say "pull" but in reality, the most important aspect is to push your left elbow forward so your arm acts as a pry bar to release your partners grip. (If you do this well, your partners hands will go up near their face)
- Do another Palm Strike with the same hand that did the first Palm strike, Right Hand.
- Finish with a Right Leg Front Kick towards your partners knee, stomach, or face.
Make sure you can do this on Both Sides! Your partner should be able to grab the left or the right hand ad you should be able escape.
*** You may hear a reference to Striking Talon A and B in the video. We used to teach 2 separate moves. We no longer teach it in 2 moves. There is only 1 technique to learn and it is called Striking Talon. In this video, it is referenced as Striking Talon B.
Inward Defense:
This is a Traditional Kenpo Self-Defense Technique.
This is another wrist grab. This is designed for a straight across wrist grab. Example, your partner's right hand grabs your left hand. It does NOT work against a cross wrist grab.
Steps (let's assume your left hand is being held):
- 3 things are going to happen at the same time. First, your left hand will pull towards your hip into a "chamber" position. Second, you will step back with your left foot. Third, your right hand will come up in the air and make an inward block motion (right arm using the pinky side forearm bone to come across the front of your face) down and on top of your partners forearm. The action of you pulling your left hand up(chamber) and your right hand coming down will release the grip.
- After your right hand breaks the grip off, your right hand will do a back chop with your palm down to your partners neck.
- your left hand will follow up with a palm strike to your partners face.
- Your front right foot will do a sidekick just above your partner's knee.
Make sure you can do this on Both Sides! Your partner should be able to grab the left or the right hand ad you should be able escape.

Self-Defense - Cycle 2
Circling Arms A:
This is a Traditional Kenpo Self-Defense Technique
This technique is used against a shoulder grab or someone trying to grab your neck with one or two hands.
These are the Steps:
- Start by raising up a hand, either hand. Let's assume we used our right hand. Be sure you raise your hand high and shrug your shoulder to your ear.
- Step back in a straight line with your left foot.
- Turn your body to the left and circle your right arm over your partners hands. Continue until your hand touches your hip.
- Your same right hand which cleared the arms will do a Back Knuckle Strike.
- The left hand follows that up with a palm strike.
This technique does NOT have to be done on both sides.
